Lyndon Garvey, Hypnotherapist

Hypnosis is a powerful therapeutic process that effects a deep level change of the mind.  It is a short term therapy that often gets results within 1-7 sessions.

The underlying premise of hypnosis is that there are two levels of the mind: the conscious and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the part of you that reasons, and is analytical and logical.  The subconscious mind is a repository of past experiences, beliefs about the world and ourselves. It is the emotional mind.

On a subconscious level many of us have acquired self-defeating "life scripts" at an early age.  For example, a child who is overly criticised by their parents may acquire a belief that they are not good enough and are unlovable. This life script will remain in the subconscious mind affecting the way a person perceives themselves even in adulthood.  Conscious reason (“but I should feel good about myself; I have achieved x, y and z”) does little to change the false belief.  Trying to think positively can be difficult, if the negative beliefs are deeply held.

The subconscious mind works like a computer. It does not analyse, it simply acts out the programming that already exists in it.  Computer scientists use the term ‘GIGO’, which stands for Garbage In, Garbage Out. If you put garbage in you’ll get garbage back out.  Whether the software is helpful or destructive – as in the case of a computer virus – depends on what is already loaded onto the system.  Likewise, whether you are happy and content with a sense of self-esteem and personal power, or depressed and anxious with low self-esteem depends largely on the existing patterns of beliefs and emotion that exist in your subconscious, or emotional mind.

As well as early programming, there are many examples of daily attempts to influence us from society, the media, business, friends and family and so on.  For example, big corporations spend billions each year on marketing designed to influence us emotionally/subconsciously to buy their products, whether we need their products, or not.

Many people are controlled by the forces of life and the negative programming in their subconscious minds, much like a ship floating in the ocean is pushed around at whim of the tide.  Hypnosis is about learning to take charge of your subconscious mind replacing negative programming with life enhancing positive beliefs and emotions.  It is akin to learning to power and steer your own ship in the direction that you consciously choose. Your subconscious mind then stops being a force that inhibits and prevents you from the life you want (“self-sabotage”) but instead moves you in the direction of greater success, happiness, and inner peace.
